Compression socks are not just for running. They can come with you to work, on a trip, during a walk or on a day when you spend a lot of time standing and moving around. But how long should you actually wear them? Can you sleep in compression socks, for example, and how many hours can you wear them?
In this guide, we explain how to use compression in everyday life as well as during training.
Can you wear compression socks every day?
Yes, you can absolutely wear compression socks every day if they feel comfortable and suit the activity you are doing. There is no need to use them only for training or competition.
Just like with other sports socks, it is about choosing the right model for the activity and making sure the sock fits well around the calf and foot. If you enjoy the feeling of compression, it can become a natural part of your everyday routine – both on training days and rest days.
There is, however, no reason to wear compression around the clock simply for the sake of it. Adjust how you use them according to your activity, comfort and personal preference.
When are compression socks useful in everyday life?
Compression can be a great everyday companion, giving your legs some extra support even on days when you are not putting on your running shoes.
- At work: Do you spend a lot of time standing or walking at work? Give your calves some extra support. Compression can help your legs feel supported throughout a long working day.
- During longer journeys: Long-haul flight, train journey or road trip? Sitting still for long periods can be challenging for your legs. Compression socks can provide a supportive and comfortable feeling while travelling.
- For everyday activity: Whether you are heading out for a power walk, a Sunday outing or a day around town, compression can combine comfort and function while you move.
- During training and running: Sports compression provides support around the calves and lower legs, whether you are chasing a new personal best or simply enjoying an easy run.

How long can you wear compression socks?
You can wear compression throughout the day if you want to. How long you can wear compression socks depends on factors such as the type of sock, what you are using it for and how it feels.
Sports compression can be worn during the activity the sock has been designed for – for example during a workout, a walk or a long and active day.
If you want to wear them for most of the day, comfort becomes especially important. In that case, a support sock may be a suitable option. The sock should feel secure without being uncomfortable. If it feels good, you can continue wearing it, but if it begins to feel too tight or causes discomfort, it is time to take it off.
If a doctor or another healthcare professional has recommended medical compression socks, follow their advice regarding when and how long they should be worn.

Can you sleep in compression socks?
This is a very common question, and the short answer is no – you generally should not sleep in compression socks. Your legs do not need the same type of support when you are lying down as they do when you are upright and active. The exception is if a healthcare professional has specifically advised you to wear compression at night.
Sports compression socks are primarily designed to be worn during the day and during physical activity. They are therefore not generally intended for sleeping. If they fit too tightly, they may cause discomfort and should therefore be removed at night.
Medical compression socks may have different uses and recommendations. If a healthcare professional has advised you to use medical compression at night, you should follow their instructions – for example after surgery.
As a general rule, let compression be part of your waking and active hours and give your feet a rest when it is time to sleep.

How tight should compression socks be?
Compression socks should fit securely and close to the leg, but they should not hurt or feel uncomfortable. A compression sock is meant to fit more snugly than a regular sports sock. At the same time, you should still be able to move freely and feel comfortable.
A good fit means that the sock lies smoothly against the skin without wrinkling or digging in. It should stay in place when you move, and your foot should feel comfortable inside your shoe.
You should not experience numbness, tingling or pain. If you do, the compression may be too strong or the sock may be too small.
A good compression sock should feel secure and supportive – not distracting. That is why choosing the correct size is important.
How to put on compression socks
Compression socks fit more snugly than regular socks and can therefore require a little technique when putting them on. Once you get the hang of it, however, it becomes quick and easy.
- Turn the sock inside out and roll it down to around where the heel begins.
- Place your foot inside and make sure the heel and toes are positioned correctly.
- Pull the sock over the heel, then gradually work it upwards over the calf.
- Distribute the material evenly. Make sure the sock lies smoothly without wrinkles or rolled edges.
- Done! The compression should now be distributed evenly around the leg and feel comfortable.
Try not to simply pull hard on the top of the sock. Instead, distribute the material gradually up the leg. This makes it easier to achieve an even and comfortable fit.
If you prefer a more breathable feeling around the foot, you can choose footless compression instead – explore our compression sleeves.

When should you not wear compression socks?
Compression socks should feel secure, but they should not hurt. If you experience clear discomfort such as numbness, tingling or pain, or if your foot feels cold or appears discoloured, remove the sock.
Also make sure the sock is distributed evenly and does not have folds around the ankle or calf. A good fit makes a big difference to both comfort and how the socks feel throughout the day.
If you have a medical condition or have been advised by a healthcare professional to use compression, follow their recommendations regarding the type of sock and level of compression that is right for you. Sports compression is developed for activity and everyday use – not as a replacement for medical treatment.
